We are thrilled to continue to offer this amazing professional development opportunity for teachers who want to delve deeper into experiential education in Santa Fe, New Mexico. As this Washington Post Travel article details, Santa Fe is a destination for foodies, art lovers, and outdoors people alike. ISEEN Summer Institute participants have the great fortune to experience the wonder of the city and the region while expanding their experience and knowledge in experiential education through immersive and educational workshops. The Institutes are conducted in partnership with Santa Fe Prep and the peaceful and zen-like Immaculate Heart of Mary Retreat Center. It is truly a magical and transformative experience because of these partnerships and through the incredible leadership of our team of facilitators.

For the 5th Annual ISEEN Summer Institutes, we will continue to offer cohort sections for Upper School teachers of math, science, history, English, and languages. We’re also thrilled to announce that we will be offering the inaugural cohort for Lower School teachers in our elementary education track. Middle School teachers may choose between their discipline or the elementary education track.

Arts teachers are encouraged to look forward to the 2020 Institutes for the next arts cohort.

All participants will gain the following:

  • An understanding of the theory and pedagogy of experiential education and how it relates to academic rigor, student engagement, and classroom enhancement.
  • Three days spent in discipline-specific intensives, learning how to apply and integrate experiential education pedagogy into the classroom. Groups are facilitated by an expert teacher from each discipline (Facilitator bios coming soon!).
  • Access to extensive resources relevant to their discipline.
  • Time to develop and receive feedback on curriculum and assessments that can be put to immediate use in their classrooms.
  • The opportunity to live and learn through experiential education lessons in practice, taking advantage of the incredible resources in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
  • A network of colleagues to connect with throughout the year and share ideas for curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
  • A better understanding of the more integrated role experiential education can play in their classrooms and school culture.

If you know that you cannot manage the full schedule, please consider joining us at a future institute.

Getting to Santa Fe: Planes–Santa Fe can be reached by two airports:

  1. Santa Fe Municipal Airport (Airport Code: SAF). This is a small airport that is only serviced by American Eagle Airlines. Flights may be more expensive into SAF but also save you the shuttle/drive time from Albuquerque.
  2. Albuquerque Sunport Airport (Airport Code: Albuquerque ). Albuquerque is serviced by a broad selection of airlines and will likely have more competitive rates. It is a one hour drive from the Albuquerque Airport to Santa Fe.

There are two shuttle companies that travel between Albuquerque and Santa Fe: Sandia Shuttle Express and RoadRunner Shuttle & Charter. Both are approx. $66+ round trip for a shuttle.

Albuquerque  Airport also has all of the major rental car companies and rates tend to be very competitive in New Mexico (and may be comparable to shuttle rates).
  3. Automobiles–If you will be driving, directions to the IHM Retreat Center can be found on the website.

Lodging Options:
All participants stay at the Immaculate Heart Retreat Center. There are a variety of shared and private lodging options at the Immaculate Heart Retreat Center that are summarized below. There is limited availability for each option and these will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Please pay close attention to the various details and options for each lodging choice below and select your first choice.

For those of you selecting a "shared" lodging option, we will match you with a roommate of the same gender, but should that be impossible you will be responsible for the higher (single occupancy/private) room rate (see all details below). If you will be traveling with a colleague/friend and would like to request them as a specific roommate, you will be able to do so in a future selection. Please make sure to communicate your request to that individual and ask them to request you as well. You both MUST choose the SAME rooming type. Please communicate your choice to them clearly.

We often sell out of the private rooms very quickly so many attendees share rooms. IHM is a unique and special space, quite different from a traditional hotel, so all of the lodging options will immerse you in this beautiful place.

If you do not see one of the following lodging options available it is because it is already full. In that case, please select the lodging waitlist for your second choice option (all attendees will be accommodated at the Retreat Center).

SOLD OUT - Private Rooms: Eight (8) private rooms with a private bath are available for $320.00 total for the 4 nights (should you want to add a partner in this room the double occupancy rate increases to $400 total). Six rooms have a queen bed and two have one twin bed. These rooms fill up quickly and will become unavailable as an option to book once full.

Shared Rooms: The majority of available lodging spaces are either shared with two twin beds or have a shared bath in a dorm-style setting. All of these rooms are $190 total for the 4 nights. If it is not possible to find a roommate, the rate will go up to $220 total.

Partners/Families:
As Santa Fe is such an appealing destination, we are often asked by potential attendees if their partner or family can join them. We understand this desire and encourage attendees to spend some extra time in Santa Fe to truly experience the wonder of this amazing city/area. That said, much of what makes the ISEEN Institute so powerful is the community that we build through meals and social/downtime and, unlike most conferences, this truly is an immersion experience. Attendees are deeply engaged from sun up to sun down with each other and the program. Partners are invited to join the group for the delicious evening BBQ dinner (additional cost) and the optional sunrise walk, but all other meals and activities are reserved solely for Institute attendees to help build and maintain that core community (and we assume and request attendees will fully participate with the program). IHM is a former monastery that has been turned into a very peaceful and zen-like retreat center. The space feels more communal than a traditional hotel so it is not especially suited to young children. Partners/families should be prepared to be very independent throughout the duration of the Institute and can drive/walk/take the bus into downtown Santa Fe (5 min drive) for meals and sightseeing and focus any family time/activities before or after the Institute dates.  If you are planning to bring a partner/family please indicate this in your registration and select the options they would like to participate in. Please also ensure you have booked either a private room or understand you will be charged a double occupancy rate. Please email [email protected] with any questions.
