Drop anchor! Body-based and trauma-informed approaches to calming and soothing someone in emotional distress.
Wednesday, November 15, 2023, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM EDT
Category: ISEEN Online Programming

This one hour workshop will guide you through what is referred to in the field of trauma work as "bottom up" approaches to calming the body in order to regulate one's emotions. Echoing the tenets of experiential education, "body to brain" approaches posit that true healing and shifts occur most profoundly when one's whole self (mind, body, and spirit) is fully engaged in the learning and healing process. Whether you're responding to a student in distress when in the field or need a midday reset during a stressful day of teaching, these anchoring and grounding techniques will bring you (and your students) back into safe connection with your body and emotions.

Facilitator: Leah Rockwell, Licensed Professional Counseloris a trauma therapist and former dean of experiential education and global programming director. Leah’s clinical work includes EMDR (Eye Movement and Desensitization) therapy and somatic therapy, and her consulting work focuses on training educators in how to approach their work in a trauma-informed way to maximize student mental health and well-being, in addition to their own. While working in independent schools and in higher education, she was a counselor, a dormitory dean, a dean on duty, a teacher of Human Development, and a Spanish teacher. Leah believes in the therapeutic power of experiential learning and loves helping teaching professionals broaden their skill sets to encourage resilience in their students.
