Share your PD Opportunities with ISEEN

Do you have a professional development opportunity or event that you'd like to share? Email us ([email protected]) and we will post it on our website calendar. Also, don’t forget to share with your colleagues on our Facebook group! It’s another way to connect with the world of ISEEN beyond email.

Educational Resources at Bibliohive

One of the coolest ISEEN membership benefits is access to Bibliohive, an annotated article sharing platform that you can get as an APP on your phone.  Don’t forget to log in to sign up for the “My Group: ISEEN” monthly email of great articles and resources for your Ex Ed work. If you know of a great resource, post it to our Facebook group or email to us at [email protected] and we’ll share and post to Bibliohive.

For example, this month in the Sustainability and Nature section, there is an exhaustive resource list on teaching climate justice by the Zinn Education Project that offers 18 classroom lessons, workshops for educators, and a sample school board climate justice resolution. The authors ask, “How do we teach the climate crisis in a way that also confronts racism, economic inequality, misogyny, militarism, xenophobia, and that imagines the kind of world that we would like to live in?”

Notes from the Executive Director
By Shoshanna Sumka

Ever since I was a kid I’ve looked forward to summertime. I have a June birthday, I love to be outside and there is just excitement and freedom of not being in school for a few months. I’m sure as educators you have similar feelings of anticipating summer.

What are you excited about this summer?

I’m most excited this summer to spend ten days with 55+ dedicated and passionate teachers in Santa Fe, New Mexico to wrap our brains around how to make classroom learning more engaging, more transformative and more relevant to both teachers and students. The caterer, Pinon Catering, always whips up delicious and abundant meals and there are late night conversations under the stars about the meaning of life!

Notes from the Board Chair
By Vicki Weeks, ISEEN Board Chair

“Summertime, and the livin’ is easy…” I know, depending on your job, work can intensify in the summer months. I also believe summer is a very important time to rest, recharge, pursue things the hectic nature of school may not allow, and spend open-ended time with loved ones. The warmer, longer days in the northern hemisphere create a sense of the expansion of time, and I welcome the opportunity to explore new worlds, whether they be on a mountainside or inside the covers of a book.

Speaking of books, the ISEEN board, as part of our ongoing commitment to educate ourselves in the area of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, read and discussed The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas in the winter and White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk about Racism by Robin DiAngelo this spring. Both books were very enlightening and led to meaningful discussions for board members.

ISEEN 2019-2020 Programming and Registration Update

We are updating and improving our registration process and that includes announcing ALL our 2019-2020 programs now! Registration for ALL ISEEN PROGRAMS will open in early August. We’ll send out an email (to this very list) and will post on social media. Note that members will have priority registration through August 31.

Below is a list of all of our programming for the next year as well as an overview of the new registration process.

Save the Dates! ISEEN 2019-2020 Programming

New Registration Process

Registration will open for all ISEEN 2019-2020 programs in August 2019. Priority registration for  Members Schools and Educational Service Providers (ESPs) for the 2020 Winter and Summer Institutes ends August 31, 2019, so make sure to look out for the opening announcement in a few weeks.

While we’ll include all of this information again, here’s some information to prepare you for the change in the registration process.

The new process will have two steps to streamline enrollment:

  1. Registration (opens August 2019 for all ISEEN programs): This first step secures spaces for attendees from your school or organization. The registration process asks general questions and involves submitting payment to hold those spots.

  2. Enrollment (varies by program): This phase of the process will be completed by the attendee who will be participating in the Institute. At this point, they will provide personal contact information and details, select sessions and Ex Ed in Action experiences and enroll in optional pre- and post-Institute activities. The contact who registered attendees will receive notification about when enrollment goes live.

We know change can sometimes cause confusion. So, if you have any questions about this process, we’re happy to talk you through it.

The Experiential Learning Certification Program (Level I Principles) is a small group online learning experience designed to support participants’ self-discovery and self-development as an experiential educator using the principles of Experiential Learning. The program design includes a flipped-classroom of asynchronous online content with weekly online interactive discussion groups to deepen understanding. The program also includes weekly meetings with learning partners to apply learning and two individual coaching sessions to build self-awareness and personal effectiveness.

Appleby College

Bringing SEL into Reflective Practices within Outdoor Education
by Patrick O’Sullivan, Assistant Director of Outdoor Education and Rob McGuiness, Assistant Head of School, Global Education

Winter Camping Site for Appleby's 10th Grade Outdoor Ed Trip

Appleby College has long held a strong belief in the power of Outdoor and Experiential Education in our students. It enhances confidence, creates more responsibility and develops skills that help them beyond their experiences.

Whether it is a bad rain storm, high winds while canoeing, walking through a snowstorm, or even just leaving their phones behind, all students on outdoor trips face adversity. Through this adversity, the support of their peers builds connections and helps them to grow, and genuine and deliberate reflection can be the element that turns the growth into transformation. At Appleby College, we are deliberately integrating a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) framework into our reflective practices to do just that, transform the experience for our students, and consequently see widespread benefits across all of our school programs.

Educational Service Provider Highlight: NCOAE

The National Center for Outdoor & Adventure Education (NCOAE) is a proud new member of ISEEN. At NCOAE, we provide exciting custom programs for students and staff — programs which provide opportunities to develop intellectual, social, and personal skills through experiential and adventure-based learning. We also offer custom staff development programs, which can take place at your school or a nearby off-campus location. Whether you need support with existing programming or help to get out the door on a new adventure, NCOAE is here to help. “Adventure First, Education Always.”
