Please join us on October 20, 2023, and spend your "Pro D" day (British Columbia folks) engaging with like-minded experiential educators as Shawnigan Lake School plays host to ISEEN's 2023 West Coast Regional Expedition!
We will experience, share, connect, and partake in incredible experiential activities, while building an ISEEN West Coast Community. Throughout the day, we will learn from each other, grow, collaborate and become acquainted with ISEEN, the Independent Schools Experiential Education Network. ISEEN is a growing network dedicated to leading, informing, connecting, expanding, and stewarding transformational experiential teaching and learning throughout an interconnected world. Workshops & Activities**Subject to change Collabyrinth: Social Emotional Growth Through an Experiential GameHumanity faces complex problems and we have a lot to learn when it comes to addressing these effectively. Building the collaborative capacity of individuals is one of the most important directions modern educational efforts can take as these problems can't be addressed meaningfully by isolated actors. Collabyrinth helps build collaborative capacity between students in a measurable and experiential way. Students engage with effort because on the surface, the activity is fun. At more depth, there are direct connections to social emotional learning as well as STEM and design-based learning. This workshop will begin with the experience of Collabyrinth, then explore some of the depth it offers, including case studies. Building and Innovating Experiential Educations Programs at Your SchoolThis workshop focuses on designing, implementing and evaluating innovative experiential education programs in your school. In this workshop, you will learn from practitioners in the field, share best practices and challenges with your peers, and develop your own action plan for creating or improving experiential education opportunities at your school. Whether you work in global education, outdoor education, service-learning, community engagement, student leadership, diversity, equity and inclusion, and/or sustainability and environmental justice, you will gain tools, ideas and components for high quality student learning. How to Build Authentic & Ethical Community Partnerships for Service Learning and Student Leadership ProjectsEngaging local non-profits, charities and social enterprises around your school can create awesome and authentic learning opportunities for your students. In this workshop, we’ll dive into the how’s and best practices of establishing authentic, community driven partnerships. We will explore various models of engagement and best practices when collaborating with organizations, while also finding unique ways to bridge lessons in global citizenship driven by community.
Opportunities to engage in structured and unstructured discussion and connection with educators from different schools across the West Coast Region.

RegistrationRegistration is open for ISEEN member and not-yet-member schools! $75 US for ISEEN Members and $90 US for Non-Members. Registration is now closed, check back for information on next year's expedition! Registration fee includes all programming participation, transportation, coffee break, lunch, and happy hour on October 20. Please email Shoshanna Sumka if the cost is a barrier to your participation. HotelWe have taken the liberty of booking a block of 25 rooms at the Oceanfront Hotel in Cowichan Bay with a special rate available until September 28 (after that it will be subject to availability). Shawnigan Lake School will provide free shuttle service from the Oceanfront Hotel. If you choose to stay elsewhere, you will be responsible for your own transportation. To book your stay online follow directions in this document and using code ISEEN. Participants can also book by calling the front desk (toll free 1.800.663.7898) and asking to book under the "ISEEN West Coast Community Regional Expedition" block. You will also need to provide your preferred date of stay - October 19 to bring up the block. Other local accommodations can be found in this document (please note that transportation will not be provided to or from these hotels). Consider staying for an extra night on Friday, October 20, and make it a weekend getaway! If there is enough interest we can offer a social pub night on the Friday night. Travel & LogisticsShawnigan Lake School is located at 1975 Renfrew Road, Shawnigan Lake, BC V0R 2W1 and can be accessed from the Victoria International Airport or the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal. Complimentary shuttles from both locations will be available. Please arrive on Thursday, October 19. We suggest making a reservation for anyone coming to Victoria from Vancouver on Thursday. The Expedition will officially begin at 10:00 AM on Friday, October 20 and conclude at 5:00 PM the same day. Please know that we value your participation at the ISEEN Expedition and we feel it is critical for participants to arrive on time and leave on time. Arriving late or leaving early not only diminishes the quality of your experience but also the shared experience of your peers.
